Most metals can be re-used and placed back in to manufacturing and can be re-used again and again. Contact us to assess and grade your metals. What is metal waste? Iron – Iron comprises almost 5% of the Earth. Therefore, it is an easy metal to find. However, pure metal is not a stable element, as it immediately reacts with the oxygen present in the air, creating iron oxide. Taking iron from its ores requires the use of a blast furnace. The first stage of the blast furnace will yield pig iron, which can be refined further to obtain pure iron. This iron usually ends up in steel and other alloys. This is why almost 90% of manufactured metals are ferrous in nature. Steel – Although pure iron is stronger than most metals, it is prone to corrosion. To keep corrosion away, you will need to spend a lot of energy and money. Iron is also extremely heavy due to its high density. Thus, steel was made by adding carbon to iron to alleviate these weaknesses to some extent. This combination of carbon and iron forms carbon steel, which is stronger than iron. As a result, steel is commonly used as a building material. Depending on its iron content, you can classify steel into three categories – low carbon steel, medium carbon steel, and... --- - Published: 2023-04-24 - Modified: 2026-05-09 - URL: https://prioritywaste.co.uk/plastic-recycling/ Priority Waste With all the problems these days surrounding plastics in our seas and rivers, it is an essential area for all businesses to focus on when it comes to recycling. While conscious E waste management can aid towards your corporate recycling responsibilities, there are several sustainable ways to get ahead with your asset management strategy, from point of purchase to data-safe disposal. In this article, we will look at practical policies that you can implement to maximise the value of your tech investments to reduce your business e-waste. Implementing procurement practices that are future-thinking The first way to future-proof your electronics is to invest in quality technology. From physical products and hardware, like laptops and computers, to tools and services, like cloud software or even AI assistants, it’s good to take a 360 view of your technology requirements. Though for large companies it may be tempting to choose cheaper models when having to buy in bulk, investing in durable, quality tech can be beneficial in the long run. Instead, look for devices that prioritise energy efficiency and have modular designs, as this will mean it is easier to fix individual parts of a product, rather than having to fully replace it. Be sure to think about the needs of your employees, and what they will be using devices for, to ensure that you select products that meet these requirements, and where possible, preempt future needs. This will lead to future-proofing your investment and reducing your ongoing technology costs. If you run a business that manufactures, distributes, imports, or disposes of electrical or electronic equipment (that’s most businesses in the UK), it’s essential - and a legal requirement - that you comply with WEEE Regulations. In this article, we tackle e-waste compliance and how you can ensure your business is on the right track. Let’s get started. Understand if You’re a Producer or Distributer Businesses that must comply with WEEE Regulations typically fall into two different categories: Producers: these are companies that manufacture or import electronics and place them on the UK market. Distributors or Retailers: these are UK businesses that sell electronic goods to consumers. Register with an Approved Compliance Scheme If your company produces electronic goods and products for the UK market, you must register your business with an Approved Producer Compliance Scheme. This is a company that handles the collection, treatment, and recycling of your electronics when you dispose of them. Essentially, they take on your legal waste responsibilities under the WEEE regulations; Collecting and treating electronic waste on your behalf Ensuring accurate data collection and submission of data Supporting you in reaching your recycling targets. These are referred to as ‘e-waste’ and sadly, half a billion unwanted electronics end up in landfills as a result of incorrect and careless electronic disposal. E-waste is one of the world’s fastest-growing waste streams. However, it is full of complexities that have many individuals and corporations confused. So, in this article we seek to dismantle this often-mistical process, helping you understand how e-waste recycling works and what really happens during the e-waste recycling process. Let’s get started. Electronics Collection and Sorting E-waste is strictly regulated in the UK by the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. The purpose of this directive is to ensure that old and unwanted electronics are responsibly collected, treated, and disposed of. Here’s what that process looks like: Once your e-waste has been collected by WEEE Collections, it is transported to a specialist sorting facility. Here the items are sorted by type, for example: Household appliances Large white goods Lighting IT equipment Electronics still in working order By sorting electronic waste in this way, recycling facilities can determine the best next steps for each item. For example, electronics still in working order might be diverted to charities or reuse schemes to give them a second chance at life - supporting a circular economy. WEEE Recycling, which stands for Waste Electrical and Environmental Equipment Recycling, is all about recycling old or unused electronics to prevent them from ending up in landfills. WEEE recycling is important because it encourages businesses to be thoughtful about the electronics they purchase, how and where they recycle, and whether they can donate their old and unwanted electronics to good causes - thereby supporting a circular economy. The Environmental Benefits of WEEE Recycling As you might expect, recycling old electronics correctly helps to protect the environment, offering the following benefits: Reduces Pollution of the Environment: when electronics end up in landfills, they pollute the environment by leaking chemicals into the ground, air, and water. These toxic substances such as lead and mercury can be extremely damaging to the environment and human health. WEEE recycling means these materials are handled carefully and properly, protecting the environment from needless pollution. Reducing Landfill Waste: electronics that end up in landfills don’t decompose. Instead, they take up valuable space and leak harmful materials and chemicals into our soil and water - affecting the environment and the long-term health of those living nearby. Choosing to recycle your old electronics keeps electronics out of landfill, protecting the environment and human health from chemical damage. Conserves Valuable Materials: did you know that your electronics contain valuable materials such as gold, copper, and silver as well as rare earth elements? With the constant evolution of technology and the world shifting its focus to sustainability in all aspects of work and play, big changes are afoot. And we’re excited to see how these changes will transform the future of electronics recycling. Let’s take a look at what electronics recycling could look like in the future. 1. Advanced Technologies for Sorting and Recycling Did you know, according to a recent survey of 2,000 adults, “a whopping four in 10 are left scratching their heads when it comes to recycling, with nearly half (47%) finding it tricky to distinguish between recyclable and non-recyclable items. ” Advanced technologies will look to change this issue in the future. Tech solutions like robots and artificial intelligence will sort waste items instead of humans, delivering more efficient and accurate results. This will speed up the recycling process, ensure sorting is carried out correctly, and protect waste workers from inhaling toxic fumes. 2. Better Material Recovery Methods Our old electronic devices are full of rare earth minerals and resources such as gold, tin, platinum, and more. To carry out IT recycling correctly and sustainably, these precious materials must be removed before items can be recycled. This avoids environmental damage as well as risk to human health. However, removing these materials is difficult and can be extremely damaging to human health in the process. With more advanced material recovery techniques such as hydrometallurgical processes and biobleaching, the future of... --- - Published: 2025-05-21 - Modified: 2026-05-09 - URL: https://prioritywaste.co.uk/understanding-the-weee-directive-what-it-means-for-your-business/ - Categories: Waste Management We all have electronic devices - multiple, in fact - at work and at home. They help us work more efficiently and stay connected with each other and the wider world. But what happens when they stop working? Do we just throw them away? The sad reality is that most people throw away their old electronics without thinking twice. In fact, the UK is one of the biggest producers of e-waste in the world. The electronics we’re throwing away are often ending up in landfills, poisoning our environment and our health. So, what can be done? Introducing: The E-Waste Directive The WEEE Directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive) is a policy encouraging people and businesses to approach electronic recycling responsibly in order to protect the environment and our health in the process. The new legislation is being introduced by the European Union with the purpose of regulating the disposal of electronics. To keep things really simple, anything with a plug is considered electronic waste and must be disposed of as such. What Does the Directive Mean for Electronics Recycling? The WEEE Directive requires businesses to be responsible for the proper disposal of their electronics, as well as the design, manufacturing, selling, and reusability of said items. The aim is to keep electronics out of landfills, protect the environment, and support a more circular and sustainable economy. Understanding the WEEE Directive Regulations The WEEE Directive covers a broad range of areas and products. However, here’s a quick rundown to help... --- - Published: 2025-04-09 - Modified: 2026-05-09 - URL: https://prioritywaste.co.uk/top-5-common-mistakes-in-asset-management-and-how-to-avoid-them/ - Categories: Food for thought, Waste Management Properly managing business assets is one of the most important ways you can support your business success. As part of this improvement, there is a big push towards seeing businesses embrace and actively participate in WEEE recycling efforts. What is WEEE Recycling? WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and Environmental Equipment and refers to any electrical or tech items that have reached the end of their useful life. Whether your company is upgrading its computers or replacing the fridge, you have items you no longer need and it’s important to dispose of them properly. Rather than seeing those items end up in landfill, we are on a mission to encourage businesses to save costs and stay compliant by recycling old electricals with care. Depending on which county you live in, recycling is typically broken down into three categories: cardboard and glass, general, and food waste. However, very few are aware of the recycling rules for businesses. What most people don’t realise is that UK businesses produce the majority of waste that is sent to landfills or shipped off to poorer countries. In the UK, businesses produce a whopping 4. 4 million tonnes of commercial and industrial waste annually. Understanding the rules and regulations around WEEE recycling for businesses is essential for tackling this problem and ensuring businesses are recycling their waste appropriately. Let’s look at how this can be achieved through WEEE recycling. What is WEEE Recycling? WEEE recycling stands for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Recycling. It is the process of recycling old electrical and electronic equipment from your business in a sustainable, environmentally-friendly way. The purpose of this is to ensure that waste produced by businesses is disposed of properly, therefore reducing environmental damage and avoiding damage to human health. Understanding WEEE Regulations for Businesses The principle behind the WEEE recycling scheme is quite simple: if your business produces or sells electrical goods, it’s your responsibility to dispose of these properly. The Environment Agency said Garrett, 64, is thought to be the “worst offender” it has seen in Devon and Cornwall for the quantity of asbestos he illegally disposed of. Garrett pleaded guilty to running a waste facility without a permit, and for disposing of waste material, namely asbestos, in a manner likely to harm the environment or human health. He was sentenced to 32 months in prison, of which he will serve half, and ordered to pay over £200,000 as part of a Proceeds of Crime Act confiscation sum. Exeter Crown Court heard that Garrett repeatedly imported waste onto his land despite being prosecuted previously and receiving multiple warnings from the Environment Agency. During sentencing, Judge Adkin described the offences as “industrial scale environmental contamination committed by an individual”. The Court heard that between July 2018 and May 2022 around 12,000 tonnes of controlled waste (mixed construction and demolition waste) was deposited on land designated as a floodplain at Garrett’s home, alongside the A380 dual carriageway. He burnt some of the waste and buried large quantities of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM), posing a risk to the environment and human health, the Environment Agency said. The National Food Crime Unit Following recommendations from Chris Elliott, Professor of Food Safety and Founder of the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen’s University, Belfast, the National Food Crime Unit (NFCU) was created. As part of the Food Standards Authority (FSA), the NFCU’s has the following objectives: Prevent food being rendered unsafe or inauthentic through dishonesty Disrupt offending and bring offenders to justice Build global and domestic counter food crime capability In its fight against food crime, the NFCU is encouraging members of the public and those working within the food and drinks sector to report their suspicions. The main types of food crime are: Theft Unlawful processing Waste diversion Adulteration Substitution Misrepresentation Document fraud READ MORE >>> --- - Published: 2019-10-14 - Modified: 2026-05-09 - URL: https://prioritywaste.co.uk/weee-costs-in-spotlight-following-pops-study/ - Categories: Business, Recycling, Waste Management - Tags: Case Study, National Coverage The Environment Agency has outlined its position on the treatment of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in WEEE plastic, which could mean that many commonly collected WEEE items may be considered as ‘hazardous’ waste.
. It is anticipated that this could add significant cost to the treatment of waste electrical and electronic equipment, as hazardous waste materials are subject to greater regulatory controls than non-hazardous waste and due to more limited treatment options. The Agency outlined its POPs position this month, following research financed through the 2018 WEEE Compliance Fund carried out by the Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling (ICER). The ICER project tested samples of plastics from different WEEE streams and found that POPs were present at levels higher than the permitted limit across multiple WEEE streams. POPs thresholds have been under scrutiny in light of the recast of the POPs regulation in Europe, which sets tougher controls on flame retardants such as decaBDE. DecaBDE – decabromodiphenyl ether – has commonly been used in consumer electrical products, and plastic vehicle components. The recast regulation sets maximum concentration levels for POPs in waste materials to levels that are below what has been commonly used in products in the past. Hazardous This means that many items, in particular Small Mixed WEEE, Cathode Ray Tube TVs and screens and Flat Screen TVs, are likely contain levels of POPs that effectively render them hazardous. The Agency’s position on POPs has been informed by the ICER research project and was outlined at a recent... --- - Published: 2019-10-14 - Modified: 2026-05-09 - URL: https://prioritywaste.co.uk/weee-costs-in-spotlight-following-pops-study-2/ - Categories: Business, Recycling, Waste Management - Tags: Case Study, National Coverage Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Plastics: Impact on WEEE Recycling POPs are a group of organic chemical substances which, due to their specific physical and chemical properties, are able to persist in the environment for long periods of time. Once released into the environment they have the ability to bio-magnify and bio-accumulate in ecosystems and have significant negative environmental and human health impacts. POPs are regulated by the Stockholm Convention adopted in 2001 and brought into force in 2004. The Stockholm Convention requires its parties (currently 181 nation states and the EU) to put measures in place to eliminate or reduce the release of POPs into the environment. How does this link to WEEE recycling? The flame retardants previously used in the manufacture of WEEE plastics are now identified as POPs, the most common being brominated flame retardants. Whilst these substances were legitimately added to plastics at the point of manufacture, they are now prohibited under the Stockholm Convention which places guidelines on the disposal of waste containing POPs. Waste containing POPs above a certain threshold is required to be disposed of in such a way that the POP is ‘destroyed or irreversibly transformed’ and the negative environmental impact is therefore removed. This means that WEEE plastics containing POPs cannot be treated in the same way as WEEE plastics which do not contain POPs. A recent study by the Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling (ICER) which tested samples of plastics from the different WEEE streams found that POPs were... --- - Published: 2019-10-14 - Modified: 2026-05-09 - URL: https://prioritywaste.co.uk/pops-impact-weee-recycling-costs/ - Categories: Business, Recycling, Waste Management - Tags: Case Study, National Coverage A recast of the EU Regulation on persistent organic pollutants (2019/1021) was adopted on 20 June and is set to significantly impact costs for WEEE producers. A recast of the EU Regulation on persistent organic pollutants (2019/1021) was adopted on 20 June and is set to significantly impact costs for WEEE producers. Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are substances that were historically used in the manufacture of EEE (electrical and electronic equipment) as a fire retardant for plastic casings that were exposed to heat, for example. Whilst their use was phased out in recent years, historically POPs were used quite widely and can now be found in significant proportions of WEEE reaching waste treatment facilities, including both household and B2B products such as appliances, IT and telecommunications equipment. Chemicals classed as POPs persist unless destroyed or irreversibly transformed and have the ability to bioaccumulate in the environment. Since they have been used in EEE for a long period of time there is a high probability that POPs have entered our ecosystem, accumulating into food chains. As such they pose a risk to human health and the environment. Far more prevalent than originally anticipated The Industry Council for Electronic Equipment Recycling (ICER) recently found that POPs in WEEE are far more prevalent than originally anticipated, with some WEEE plastics falling foul of the legally allowed limit in categories such as display equipment. Consequently, plastics derived from these streams can no longer be recycled without the separation of the PBDE (polybrominated diphenyl ethers)... --- - Published: 2019-10-01 - Modified: 2026-05-09 - URL: https://prioritywaste.co.uk/what-to-look-for-in-a-waste-management-supplier/ - Categories: Business, Recycling, Waste Management When looking for a Waste Management supplier, it is essential that the service provider meets certain criteria. Any retailer selling electrical goods must follow government regulations and provide a way for customers to dispose of the electrical items, either by providing a free in store take back service, or by setting up an alternative free take back service. The WEEE Regulations 2013 state that: ‘Producers of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) are responsible for financing and ensuring the disposal of end-of-life products in an environmentally sound way arising from both household and non-household users. ’ However, with increasing use of online shopping platforms and marketplaces such as Amazon, identifying producer responsibility can be more complicated, leading to the practice of ‘free-riding. ’ This is where online retailers sell products directly to households in the EU from producers based outside of the EU and are therefore not registered with WEEE compliance schemes, avoiding national producer responsibility obligations, including paying compliance fees. Currently taxpayers by way of local councils must pay the £1bn it costs to process this rubbish, with supermarkets and big corporations only contributing around 10 per cent of the money required. Under the latest plan, those responsible for the waste will be legally obliged to pay for its disposal, and industry will have to pay higher fees if their products are difficult to reuse or recycle. The government claims this tactic will encourage more sustainable design, and raise crucial funds to support local recycling efforts. These plans, set to come into force in 2023, will be subject to consultation in the new year. The move marks the first update to the government’s waste strategy for over a decade, and comes at a time when the nation’s waste management faces heavy criticism. Recycling rates across England have flatlined for the past five years amid growing concerns about plastic pollution and the environmental impact of food waste and recyclables shipped overseas. Other measures in the new strategy include weekly food waste collections for every home and clearer packaging labels to give people a better idea of what can be recycled. Launching the strategy at a recycling centre in London, environment secretary Michael Gove said: “Together we can move away from being a... --- - Published: 2019-05-26 - Modified: 2026-05-09 - URL: https://prioritywaste.co.uk/why-your-business-needs-a-waste-management-plan-business-matters/ - Categories: Industry News, News, Recycling, Waste Management Many businesses regard their waste management as an unavoidable operational cost and that is their final thought on the matter. Smart businesses, however, view this as a point of strategy. Apart from statutory regulations governing how businesses deal with different types of waste, businesses stand to gain from understanding business waste and optimising their waste management. WHAT IS WASTE MANAGEMENT? Waste management looks at the entire life cycle of waste within a business. This includes how your enterprise generates waste, how it is stored, transported, and the means of disposal. WHY IS A WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN IMPORTANT? Waste doesn’t come cheap Business waste disposal can account for 4-5% of your turnover and it is predicted that this is an expense which will continue to grow over time. Make it legal There is a statutory duty of care associated with business waste which has been put in place for human health and the good of the environment. It can improve your bottom line Apart from finding cost-effective waste management services, coming up with a waste management strategy can reveal ways to reduce use of certain raw materials and re-use and recycle certain waste products. The best businesses are sustainableThe importance of sustainable practices are well-known. Considering businesses dispose of millions of tonnes of waste each year, the effect of waste disposal on the environment is becoming increasingly important (and makes a difference to your business reputation too). Populations of deer, rabbits and turtles live here. The air is clean and the only signs that we are standing above a 24-metre (79 feet) deep landfill are the methane gas pipes rising from the grass. Ljubljana is the first European capital to commit to going zero-waste. But fifteen years ago, all of its refuse went straight to landfill. “And that is expensive,” says Nina Sankovič of Voka Snaga, the city’s waste management company. “It takes up space and you’re throwing away resources. ” So the city decided to change course. A deer grazes on Ljubljana’s old landfill site; the city is a backdrop to the site’s green spaces and methane pipes It began in 2002 with separate collection of paper, glass and packaging in roadside container stands. Four years later, the city began collecting biodegradable waste door to door; separate collection of biowaste is set to become mandatory across Europe in 2023, but Ljubljana was nearly two decades ahead of the curve. In 2013, every doorstep in the city received bins for packaging and paper waste. And, most controversially, scheduled collections of the residual waste were cut by half – forcing people to separate their rubbish more efficiently. Members of Tenby town council have questioned recently why the ‘eyesore’ blue bins are back blocking the iconic town walls along the South Parade, after being removed last summer following action by Pembrokeshire County Council. Speaking at Tuesday night’s meeting of the town council, Clr. Laurence Blackhall told his colleagues that a number of people had enquired with him as to what progress had been made in getting the bins removed again. “Let’s make it incredibly clear, no blue bins or any trade waste bins, other than those public bins put out by PCC, should be along the South Parade, St Florence Parade or anywhere near adjoining the town walls and Five Arches,” he said.
